Contraindications To Massage

Massage Contraindications/Warnings

     While massage is generally considered a natural, relaxing, non-invasive, safe treatment, it does have it's precautions. There are three types of contraindications:

1. TOTAL - massage should not be performed at all

When you have any of these conditions, massage should not be performed:

  • Fever
  • Contagious or infectious diseases
  • Under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Recent operations
  • Neuritis (inflammation of the nerves)
  • Skin diseases

 2. LOCAL - massage may be performed but not over any areas affected by:

  • Inflammation
  • Undiagnosed pain
  • Sunburn
  • Abrasions
  • Cuts
  • Bruising
  • Pregnancy
  • Undiagnosed lumps or bumps
  • Mild/Severe varicose veins

 3. MEDICAL - If you suffer from any of the following conditions, massage can only take place once it has been approved by a physician (see client forms for physicians release form)

  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Cancer
  • Cardio-vascular conditions (thrombosis, pheliitis, hypertension, heart conditions)
  • Oedema/Edema
  • Psoriasis or Eczema
  • High blood pressure (Uncontrolled)
  • Osteoporosis
  • Nervous or Psychotic conditions
  • Any condition currently being treated by a medical practitioner
  • Pacemakers
  • Bell's palsy, trapped or pinched nerves
  • Gynecological infections
